Hitting the road with hope: Drive for Cancer

For Michael, making a difference for people with cancer was as simple as following an old and beloved hobby.
A car enthusiast since childhood, Michael was eager to give back to the community after his dad was treated for cancer at Peter Mac. Drawing on his love of cars, he created the Drive for Cancer event in 2011 to raise funds for Peter Mac’s lifesaving cancer research.

“I wanted to do something a bit different, so I invited everyone from the car clubs along and asked them to donate to Peter Mac.”
Now a yearly event, Drive for Cancer supporters drive in a convoy starting at the Grand Prix racetrack and finishing in the Mornington Peninsula. A wide range of raffle prizes are on offer for car fans, with many dealerships generously donating exciting prizes.
Drive for Cancer has only grown bigger and better since starting over thirteen years ago. People from all backgrounds come together to make new friends, bond over the shared cause, and have a great time along the way. At its most recent event in March, Drive for Cancer raised an incredible $20,000 for Peter Mac, with nearly 150 cars joining to support the fight against cancer.
Michael’s vision is to see research and development that makes cancer easier to cure and hopes to one day live in a cancer-free world. He plans to keep organising Drive for Cancer each year to support discoveries and breakthroughs that help all people affected by cancer.

Michael’s advice to other people who wish to fundraise for Peter Mac is to follow their passion and what they enjoy doing.
“Do an event that you personally love, and it won’t be a chore.”
We are deeply thankful to Michael and Drive by Cancer supporters for their generosity and support. If you are interested in creating an event to support a cancer-free future, we warmly welcome you to set up your own fundraising event.
