Dr Kasmira Wilson is a researcher at Peter Mac, specialising in bowel and rectal cancers. She is part of a multidisciplinary team known as the Ramsay Laboratory, which consistently delivers life-changing research for cancer patients.

In 2020 Kasmira and her team will be investigating the effectiveness of specialised treatment options for colorectal patients.

Immunotherapy itself has been a major breakthrough in cancer research. Most broadly studied for its effectiveness in treating late-stage melanoma, this type of therapy teaches the body’s own immune system to target and remove cancer cells. When it’s delivered in combination with other types of treatment — such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy — it has proven to significantly improve outcomes for some patients.

With bowel cancer being the second largest cause of cancer-related deaths in Australia, Kasmira is hopeful that more research can offer detailed insight into the benefits of immunotherapy for patients with colorectal cancers.

It’s because of generous people like you that research teams like Dr Kasmira Wilson’s can deliver such promising work. Thank you for supporting research at Peter Mac and helping to discover new ways to save more lives.
