Collingwood at Peter Mac 
Proving he also has a big heart, Collingwood’s Mason Cox dropped in to Peter Mac to visit some of our patients (and massive Pies fans), Nick and Ricky. They had the chance to meet one of football’s tallest heroes and to hold the 2010 AFL Premiership Cup. 

This visit not only meant the world to Nick and Ricky, but also made the day of our staff!

Carlton at Peter Mac 
Former co-captain of Carlton and patient of Peter Mac Sam Docherty know's too well the challenges cancer patients can face. Whilst undergoing treatment for testicular cancer, his Carlton teammates banded together to shave their heads, and collectively raised over $200,000 in 2021 for Peter Mac.

“Over the past 20 years, I’ve been passionate about understanding how and why cancers spread to the bones and finding ways to prevent this or treat it when it does. Today, we are nearly there.” Professor Belinda Parker is one of the bright research minds here at Peter Mac, working tirelessly to discover new and more effective cancer treatments and cures. For years, Professor Parker and her team have worked hard to discover and understand the biology behind how cancers in the bone hide from the immune system. They’re focused on finding ways to make metastasised cancer cells visible to the body, so that the immune system can seek them out and destroy them, leading to improved patient survival. “Bone metastasis is one of the major focuses of my lab. It’s most common in hormone receptor-positive women – women whose cancer cell growth is driven by hormones. Currently there is no cure for cancer that has spread to the bones.” In collaboration with leading engineers, Professor Parker and her team have developed a world-first bone scaffold. This prototype is a critical step in researching bone cancers. It provides a viable framework that allows tumours from patients to grow outside of the body, and will allow Professor Parker and her team to investigate the biology behind bone metastasis in the labs at Peter Mac. “I’ve been working on models of metastases for years, and this is a real first. It's the first time we have been able to keep a bone metastases sample taken directly from a patient alive – to see in real time whether we can change the biology of the cancer and make it visible to the body's immune system.” Professor Parker is about to move her project to its next important stage. It’s almost been a week since 750 firefighters took on the 11th annual Melbourne Firefighters Stair Climb. Together they climbed 28 floors carrying up to 25kgs of kit (turnout gear and breathing apparatus) to raise life-saving funds. As a proud beneficiary we are incredibly grateful to @000_foundation and all of the climbers including three special Peter Mac team members, Sean, Liam and Madeline, for their inspiring efforts. The day raised a total of $768,000 with $310,000 of that impressive result going to cancer research at Peter Mac. In June and August, we had the honour of hosting two incredible groups of trekkers as they took on the majestic Larapinta Trail to raise funds for cancer research at Peter Mac. In April 2023, Sadie was – almost literally – on top of the world. She was fit and healthy, and had just attempted to break a cycling world record. Sadly, 6 weeks after her world record attempt, she heard the news that no cancer patient ever wants to hear: her cancer had returned. What’s worse, as is too often the case with returning cancers, it was now incurable. Scans revealed that Sadie’s cancer had spread and metastasised in her bones and liver. Her diagnosis was terminal, and she was given a life expectancy of five to seven years. Or less. “You can't make a plan that undoes the fact that you've just been delivered a terminal diagnosis. All I remember thinking in that moment was, ‘I don't want to die’.” Today, Sadie is more than a year into a clinical trial at Peter Mac. The treatment isn’t a cure - but for Sadie it’s giving her more options and more time. “We have really effective treatments for metastatic breast cancer – I’m on one right now. It’s killed almost all of the cancer in my body except for one tumour. But from here, the news can only be as good as that, or worse. Unless better treatments are found.” The experimental treatment is working well for Sadie, with scans showing that her cancer is under control. But Sadie knows that her cancer will eventually develop a resistance and the treatment she’s on could stop working at any time. Despite it all, she remains determined and holds onto the hope that cancer researchers will discover a new treatment option, or even a cure for her cancer. “I hope that when I’ve exhausted the current treatments, there will be another one available. One that would extend my life.” Sadie is running out of options, and she needs the support of people like you.
